Firestone: "The Tire of Tomorrow...Today!"

Next to Kelly Springfield, Firestone produced some of my favourite tire ads of the 40's and 50's. As a whole, they have an almost fanciful approach and seems to have been designed to appeal to the boy in Firestone's male target audience.

From their audacious "Scenes from the World of Tomorrow" ads of the mid-1940's...

... to this clean, bright, race car ad from the mid-1950's, Firestone's ads were bursting with bold colour, aggressive energy, modern design and inventive themes.

Even this winter tire ad below, which seems relatively uninspired at first glance, is actually really eye-catching for its vivid colour scheme and clean, stark design -- and then on closer examination you realize its playful concept: its the attack of the 50 foot tire!

There's a lot of fun art in these pieces - well worth taking a closer look at. To do so, go to the full size versions in my Auto Ads Flickr set.
